Wood Species

Tilde Furniture uses a selection of domestic and FSC-certified woods as standard in our product line.  However, we are happy to provide species that are not standard to our line.  Please inquire for pricing and availability.

Tilde will not provide any materials that are deemed endangered or disruptive to an ecosystem.  We work only with suppliers who are fully responsible in regard to ecology, local economies, and fair trade.

Finishes

Custom Finishes

Tilde Furniture is happy to provide custom finishes, as long as they are deemed practical by our factory.  Depending on the finish, it may void certain aspects of the warranty.  Once the finish, and its’ process, have been determined, Tilde will provide a custom quote.  Samples will be provided for signed approval prior to commencing work.  The first sample is always free.  Additional samples are $40 each, payable upon request of the sample.  It is highly recommended to send us reference materials and colors for design guidance.  These will be returned to the showroom representative.

Standard Finishes

Each furniture piece comes with standard finishes.  These will be listed on each catalog specification sheet.  For questions regarding the use of other Tilde finishes not listed, please inquire about ability to use and price.

Our Polyurethane Coatings are water-based and are standard in Dull, Eggshell and Semi-Gloss.  Satin and Gloss are available upon request, and sometimes used as standard on particular items.  This material is formaldehyde-free, has very low VOCs, and qualifies for LEED points.

Distressing

There are many types of distressing.  Please inquire if a desired method is not listed in our catalog.  We are happy to do a sample for approval.  Base prices are listed as no distressing.

Standard Distressing Methods

Worm holes, gouges, cracks, dents, chisel lifts, and knot exaggerations are physical distresses that are typical for our line.  Please inquire about other options.

Hand-dappling, crackle, and glazing are typical finish aging and development techniques that are done for our customers.

Painted Finishes

Some painted finishes are a proprietary combination of materials.  They can be ordered as is, or altered for a custom charge.  In example, the “Pearl” series may be ordered as a standard paint finish with a protective water-based polyurethane coating.  Please see above note regarding Custom Finishes, if a custom color is desired.

Glass

Tilde Furniture pieces are offered with glass elements.  When possible, we use recycled-content materials.  This is especially true for hand-cast details.  Slight inconsistencies are inherent to the manufacturing of certain types of glass and are considered to be within standard specifications.  If we have chosen to use them, it is because we appreciate the character of the material and believe it enhances the furniture piece’s appearance.   For hand-poured glass, expect undulations and small air pockets.  Our tables are available without the glass top.

Metals

Bronze

We love bronze for its’ warm appearance and classic qualities.  90% of it’s content is recycled copper, and we reuse up to 50% of our bronze waste in each casting.  Our standard patina is a simple paste wax application that gives an aged warm appearance.  You may specify the level of darkness.  We also offer bronze in a polished finish.  This is a living finish, unless otherwise specified.

Steel

Our recycled-content hand-wrought steel is offered in two finish methods: hand-painted and powder coated.

Stainless Steel

Tilde uses stainless steel on select pieces where a clean metal look is desired, without the need for additional energy embodied finishes.  Inquire about availability and pricing, if not listed as standard.

Aluminum

Recycled-content aluminum is used in the furniture line.  Standard finishes are polished, brushed and satin.  A powder-coating or paint finish may also be applied.

Recycled Paper Products

(Click to download Paper Color PDF)

Paper slabs share many characteristics of wood and have similar design considerations.  Since paper is recycled from many sources, expect slight variations in color from one sheet to the next.  While we do our best to match the goods, seams will likely be visible.  Repairs are somewhat difficult and should only be done by a professional.  Further information can be found on our maintenance page, as well as the manufacturer’s websites.

Tilde Furniture works with two manufacturers of paper countertop materials: PaperStone and EcoTop. PaperStone uses phenolic resins that tend to amber (darken) over time.  Our standard colors are chosen to minimize this effect.  The natural color irregularity of this manufacturer’s product offers a rich warm appearance, similar to aged leather.

EcoTop is the latest generation in paper products.  The resin and technology incorporated offer a more consistent color appearance, with only slight variation.  Again, because it’s a natural product, there will be variations from sheet to sheet.  But, the colors are more stable.   This material has a cleaner, more modern look.

Both materials are very dense and quite practical.  They are shock and stain resistant; but, like wood, take some care to last indefinitely.

Tilde offers a selection of each manufacturer’s colors as standard to our line.  These are:

PaperStone:

Chocolate, Denim Blue, Evergreen, and Slate (Black)

EcoTop:

Snow White, Ivory, Pecan, Concrete (Cool Gray), Thistle, Espresso, and Jet Black

Decorative Wheat Straw

Torzo’s Durum, a slab material that is highly renewable and made from agricultural by-products, is one we find very stylish and have incorporated it in to our line.  This product provides a sophisticated look for a very organic material.  All sheen levels are available upon request.

WOOD STAINS

The stains that are used on Tilde’s furniture pieces are low-VOC and water based.  They are sealed with a water-based polyurethane clear coat to help minimize maintenance and ease cleaning.  However, the use of coasters and hot pads is still highly recommended to prevent damage to the finish.  Any spills should be wiped immediately to protect your furniture.

The best way to clean your furniture is to regularly wipe with a soft cloth.  Non-abrasive soaps can be used, and proper damp cloth clean water wiping will eliminate the soap film.

RECYCLED PAPER

Depending on the desired look and color, we work with two paper top manufacturers.  The manufacturers use 100% post-consumer recycled paper or cardboard.  In general, paper tops should be treated like high-quality wood tops.  The use of coasters and hot pads is highly recommended.  General cleaning consists of wiping down the surface with hot soapy water or a mild kitchen cleaner.  *Never use chemicals to clean or refinish paper products.  Do not use bleach or bleach-based products.  Regular use of PaperStone Cleaner and Rejuvenator will maintain the original luster and protection.  This product can be purchased online or through eco-product suppliers that provide paper countertops.

SCRATCHES AND REFINISHING

To remove stains and light scratches, use a maroon or grey Scotch Brite pad with light buffing.  If harsh scratches or burn marks accrue, the manufacturer recommends the use of a maroon Scotch Brite or 220 grit or above sand paper on a random orbital sander to remove.  Excessive sanding in the same area may result in light spots.  Refinishing of the whole area may be needed to keep a consistent look across the entire surface.

We have treated your top surface with an eco-friendly hard oil finish.  For ongoing maintenance, the use of the PaperStone Cleaner and Rejuvenator can be applied as often as desired.  Read the application instructions prior to use.

BRONZE

The bronze elements have received a wax finish at the foundry.  This is a minimal impact finish that requires little maintenance.  Nonetheless, the wax will be removed by heavy scrubbing.  The best way to clean your bronze elements is to wipe with a soft cloth.  Non-abrasive soaps can be applied, and proper rinsing with a clean damp cloth will eliminate the soap film.

If the finish is removed, your bronze items will begin to patina.  This can be arrested by either applying additional wax, or having a local finisher apply a non-toxic low-VOC clear sealant.

While the sealant is a low-maintenance solution, it may change the sheen and finish of the metal that is being treated.  Be sure to request non-toxic low VOC sealants and inform the finisher that the original finish is wax.

The wax used on your furniture is paste wax.  Please either follow manufacturer recommended application instructions or hire a professional finisher.

PAINTED FINISHES

All Tilde Furniture painted finishes are protected with a water-based polyurethane clear coat to help minimize maintenance and ease cleaning.  However, the use of coasters and hot pads is still highly recommended to prevent damage to the finish.  Any spills should be wiped immediately to protect your furniture.

Cleaning painted furniture should first be attempted by dusting or using a damp soft cloth.  If this does not work, use non-abrasive soap and water.

OIL WAX FINISHES

Tilde Furniture wood pieces are available in a plant-based oil wax finish.  This is a very low impact natural finish that offers water repellant and water mark resistant qualities.  However, it is not as durable as our water-based polyurethane clear coat.  That said, it has a very desirable look, feel, and scent.

Occasional reapplication of the wax finish is recommended to maintain a consistent look and better protection.  It is recommended that you contact us prior to purchasing the finish materials to confirm the product that we’ve used.  We will need the approximate date and location of purchase.

The best way to clean your furniture is to regularly wipe with a soft cloth.  Non-abrasive soaps can be used, and proper damp cloth clean water wiping will eliminate the soap film.

METAL LEAF FINISHES

Our gold and aluminum metal leaf finishes have been sealed with a water-based polyurethane clear coat to help minimize maintenance and ease cleaning.

The best way to clean your metal elements is to wipe with a soft cloth.  Non-abrasive soaps can be applied, and proper rinsing with a clean damp cloth will eliminate the soap film.

GLASS

Never use Windex, or similar ammonia-based products on glass, as they are known to damage the surface.  We recommend wiping with a dry or slightly moist soft cloth, such as cotton.  Vinegar and water may be also be used.  For other cleaning products, please read their instructions for proper use.

DECORATIVE WHEAT STRAW

Torzo’s Durum, the product that we use, is 70%  post agricultural wheat scraps, and 30% non-toxic acrylic resin.  Wheat straw has a fairly fragile edge, and should be treated accordingly.  Our finish coat is the same that we use for our wood finishes, and will perform in a similar fashion.  Excessive moisture should be immediately wiped.

The best way to clean your furniture is to regularly wipe with a soft cloth.  Non-abrasive soaps can be used, and proper damp cloth clean water wiping will eliminate the soap film.
